Buddhists located in Europe, Great Britain and North America like to think that the religion is much progressed in thought but this is not so in Asian countries. In Asian countries and others Buddhists believe in superstition involving amulets for good luck, curses, ghosts and witchcraft that are in fact an accepted part of the faith and practice of such which are mentioned in the early scriptures. Much of the belief came from Hinduism including the idea of troublesome ghosts which are considered a lower reincarnation atoning for bad karma in bad places where they eat bad food which includes corpses. Hungry ghosts are those which are identified by large, extended bellies and small mouths by which they cannot feed their powerful hunger. They are one type of spiritual being included in Buddhist life which includes stories of ghosts who have to eat themselves and were probably not intended to be literally understood. The Buddhist religion is thought to have evolved from the Hindu religion in that it shares beliefs in karma, dharma and reincarnation. Karma is the total of a person’s actions of body, speech and mind, good, bad and neutral taken in their current and previous lives. There now exist 6 recognized forms of the Buddhist religion each with a slight difference in the acceptance of the paranormal. Theravada Buddhism – It is sometimes called Southern Buddhism and is the dominant type of Buddhism in Southeast Asia since the 13th century. It is found in Thailand, Burma, Cambodia and Laos. Mahayana Buddhism – It is sometimes called Northern Buddhism and is largely found in China, Japan, Korea, Tibet and Mongolia. Vajrayana Buddhism – It is also known as Tantric, Mantrayana, Tantrayana, Esoteric or True Words Sect. Tibetan Buddhism – This sect developed in isolation from the other sects because of Tibet being remote. Zen Buddhism – This developed from the Chinese Mahayan sect known as Chan. It is becoming more popular in the rest of the world. Buddha’s Teachings contain four noble truths as written in the Tipikata: There is suffering. There is cause for suffering. There is cessation of suffering. There is path leading to the cessation of suffering. Buddhist Paranormal Belief Religious Paranormal Belief
