Sikh Paranormal Belief

Sikh paranormal belief is based on the fact that it is a recent and faith based religion and as such has answers for nearly all of problems that people face in life. The Sikh clergy noted that others believed in evil spirits and the paranormal, examined why people consider this a true phenomenon and then offered solutions. To believe in the paranormal of any kind is weakness and fear in the individual.

It is of interest that not only did some people believe in ghosts and many actually believed the founder of the of the Sikh religion, Guru Nanak was indeed a ghost or at least one who was possessed by evil spirits.

In his own words (M: 1, SGGS, p 991) “Some call me a ghost, some say I am a demon, others say Nanak is just a hapless man. (Actually) I am inebriated by the love of the Master and take note of none else; people think I am mad.”

The Sikh faith believes that the present day paranormal belief, investigation and phenomena associated with haunting are a result of unexplained visions, sounds and fear of death. They even attribute much of this to carbon monoxide poisoning which has symptoms of being listless, depressed, suffering from dementia and hallucinations. It is believed that when one attributes such to the existence of ghosts or spirits you are giving into unfounded fears or lack of self confidence.

These teachings are as advocated by Guru Nanak who was born when India’s two main communities Hindus and Muskims were believed to be losing value in their faiths. It was believed that priests were exerting too much power and were giving into rituals and superstitions. Guru Nanak stated that there is no Hindu and no Muslim.

This was a total different school of thought and many considered him mentally ill with even his parents advising him to seek medical help.

The Sikh religion known as Sikhism is a monotheistic religion and believes in the pursuit of salvation through disciplined, personal meditation on the name and message of God. God is in fact considered as the Universe.Sikhism is based on the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev and was founded in the fifteenth century Punjab and is the fifth largest religion today. There have been ten successive Sikh Gurus to date.

There are over 23,000,000 Sikhs across the world. Most live in Punjab in India and millions in what is known as Pakistani Punjab.

The essence of Sikh teaching is contained in these words. Realization of Truth is higher than all else. Higher still is truthful living.

Sikhism believes believes in equality of all humans and rejects discrimination on the basis of caste, creed and sex.

God is neither male or female.

Nanak’s teachings are not founded on a final destination of heaven or hell, but on a spiritual union with God which results in salvation. The chief reasons one does not attain salvation are social conflicts and worldly pursuits which cause men and women to have an endless cycle of birth or reincarnation.Sikhs believe there are five evils, ego, anger, greed, attachment and lust.

Sikhs believe that they should balance work, worship, charity and should defend the rights of all creatures as well as fellow human beings. They stress the concept of sharing by distribution of food, giving charitable donations and working for the good of the community and others
