Theravada Buddhist Paranormal Belief

Theravada Buddhist Paranormal Belief as it is the oldest form of Buddhism throughout Asia, at first glance appears to be superstition free and offers a rational understanding of the paranormal. Buddhists located in Europe, Great Britain and North America like to think that the religion is much progressed in thought but this is not so in Asian countries.

In Asian countries and others Theravada Buddhists believe in superstition involving amulets for good luck, curses, ghosts and witchcraft that are in fact an accepted part of the faith and practice of such which are mentioned in the early scriptures.

Much of the belief came from Hinduism including the idea of troublesome ghosts which are considered a lower reincarnation atoning for bad karma in bad places where they eat bad food which includes corpses.

Hungry ghosts are those which are identified by large, extended bellies and small mouths by which they cannot feed their powerful hunger. They are one type of spiritual being included in Buddhist life which includes stories of ghosts who have to eat themselves and were probably not intended to be literally understood.

Theravada Buddhist paranormal belief is thought to have evolved from the Buddhist religion in that it shares beliefs in karma, dharma and reincarnation.Karma is the total of a person’s actions of body, speech and mind, good, bad and neutral taken in their current and previous lives.

Buddha’s Teachings contain four noble truths as written in the Tipikata:

There is suffering. There is cause for suffering. There is cessation of suffering. There is path leading to the cessation of suffering.

The Theravada Buddhist Religion is the oldest surviving Buddhist faith which was founded in India and being relatively conservative is considered fairly close to early Buddhism.

It is estimated that there are over 100 million adherents worldwide.

There is little information about the later history of Theravada Buddhism in India, and it is not known when it disappeared in its country of origin.
