Religion and Porn

Religion and Porn there are varied official religious positions on this subject whether it be an Abrahamic, Dharmic or Far Eastern religion.

The official religious position seldom speaks to the individual’s interest in porn. Porn and the acceptance of such in the various religions will be explored in this discussion.

Abrahamic religions include Christian, Islamic, Jewish, Bahai and Rastafari.

Dharmic religions include Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh and Janis.

Far Eastern religions include Tao, Shinto and Confucist.

With the advent of the internet and communication capabilities being available to all, porn has spread very quickly and widely. It is estimated that the porn market throughout the world now generates approximately 10 billion dollars annually with by far the majority of viewers being male. There is indeed a market for this product.

Religion and porn is not often discussed within the context of religious institutions as it is frowned upon, as all are afraid that a frank discussion may indeed reveal aspects to the speaker’s character and sexual tastes revealing fantasies he or she would rather not be known.

Many consider that porn is an affront to women as often they are portrayed in a submissive and demeaning manner in porn films.

However it is reported that many religious types enjoy porn as it brings a sexual excitement into their lives that religion rejects. This is healthy if both partners feel the same.

For porn to be considered obscene it must be considered as such by the community as a whole and there lies the difficulty, as the size of the market would indicate that a fair percentage of the community does not consider it obscene. It is complicated even to define pornography as the word itself from the Greek is translated as “writing about whores”.

As early as 1957 the US Supreme Court defined obscenity not pornography as “ A thing is obscene if, considered as a whole, its predominant appeal is to prurient interest i.e. a shameful or morbid interest in nudity, sex or excretion, and if it goes substantially beyond customary limits of candor in description or representation of such matters.”

Some people believe that porn is addictive and through time it takes more exposure to realize the same sexual arousal.

Some believe porn is helpful in the bedroom in many marriages, as the man uses the porn to be titillated or aroused and this helps to initiate sex in the bedroom. It becomes less than helpful when the man expects his partner to perform as expected in his fantasies and she does not have the same sexual requirements or wants.

Pornography may lead the man to believe that specific sexual acts depicted are normal and have wide acceptance among all. This is often not the case and results in anger and tension in the bedroom. It has been suggested that one discusses their sexual preferences with their partner and it is clearly understood what is acceptable and what is not.
